An electrifying chase with well-known Hollywood giants and starring the new BMW i7 M70? Sounds like a blockbuster.
BMW Films presents THE CALM, the newand exciting short film on the BMW Theatre Screen as part of the Cannes international film festival. The combination of luxury, performance and electromobility (➜ Read also: Time for sustainable luxury) is inimitably showcased by the new BMW i7 M70. The vehicle is not just in a supporting role as a luxury lounge on wheels, but it turns out to be the linchpin of the plot, not least because of its energetic driving characteristics.

The short film, penned by director Samuel Hargrave (“Extraction”) and executive producer Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), is part of a long film tradition at BMW. THE CALM is also an homage to “The Hire” film series from BMW. A total of ten of these films were shot in two seasons in 2001 and 2002, a legacy that continued with the 2016 short film “The Escape.” Each of these flicks featured Hollywood greats both in front of and behind the camera.
In THE CALM – in addition to the cast around Pom Klementieff, Uma Thurman and Nate Perry – it is not only the BMW i7 M70 that plays a leading role as the first luxury electric car with an M engine; the acoustics also have an important part to play. The concept of silence was a fascinating one for director Sam Hargrave, as he explains. In most regular films, he said, the plot is very much integrated with the sound design. “So how do you tell a thrilling story without turning away from sound design, but instead incorporating silence into sound design,” the director wondered. Because sometimes, he says, the absence of sound is more effective than an expansive score or a big sound effect.
Traditionally, action is accompanied by a strong soundtrack (➜ Read also: Hans Zimmer – soundtrack of electric mobility) to get that adrenaline flowing through the viewer. But if you omit the soundtrack or the score, you sit back because you want to hear everything that’s going on, Hargrave says. “We lean on the element of silence to enhance the narrative in this short film.”

We tried to create the complete opposite of most chases: watching from outside the car, you hear all these engine noises – exciting, adrenaline-pumping. Now, all is whisper quiet when the camera is outside the car while it is driving. Inside the car, however, there’s an acoustic beat going on that’s in direct contrast to what’s happening outside.
